Welcome to my Blog

Welcome to my Blog

August 08, 2004

Welcome to my blog. This is a bit of an experiment so I ask visitors to bear with me while I get the hang of this.

I’ve titled this blog “What I Really Want to Say” because that’s what I plan to do in this space. That will be quite a change for me.

I’ve spent more than 25 years writing professionally for some of the world’s top news organizations. I am extremely proud of my work, some of which is featured elsewhere on this site, and the collegial publishing relationships that made it all possible.

And yet, I must admit that when I review my archives I see the many stories and columns that are not there. The stories I never wrote. They were about ideas, and people, and insights, and possibilities, and outrages, and impossible coincidences. They were important. But they also did not fit in with the format, needs or editorial desires of the owners of the various blank spaces I have been asked to fill over the years. So they were never written.

This is my own personal blank space. I invite you to join me in the weeks and months ahead as I get some things off my chest.
